How to get the With or Without You guitar tone

Not quite clean, not quite dirty. That edge-of-breakup thing is genuinely hard to dial in and U2 got it right. The EQ sits fairly balanced, which puts all the expressive work back on touch and technique rather than frequency shaping. Layer in chorus and plate reverb and echo and the whole thing takes on a dimension you can't get from the amp alone.
